The time has come to face the reality of government corruption. A time to finally recognize, paraphrasing Jefferson’s warning, that those entrusted with power are by slow operations perverting government into tyranny.

One cannot determine the exact moment corruption becomes tyranny any more than one can specify the moment the overnight dew made a leaf wet. But by slow operations – abuse of power, trading favors for votes, bribery with tax exemptions, excessive rules and regulations, ignoring the Constitution, unbridled bureaucratic overreach, viewpoint discrimination, misuse of resources, favoritism, crony capitalism, scratch-my-back tradeoffs – the case-after-case evidence piles up until one must finally say, “Yup, that leaf is wet.”

We are on the cusp of the tyrannization of the government of the United States of America. The cases of corruption are too numerous to think otherwise.

Herewith a few highlights, the fuller explanations you can read in my book.

When government spends more than it takes in and refuses year after year to balance its budget, that is corruption.

When government fobs off its debt to generations yet unborn, that is corruption.

When government intentionally diminishes the purchasing power of its currency, that is corruption.

When people can vote without verification of identity and eligibility, that is corruption.

When the philosophy of prosecutors is that a defendant is guilty until proven innocent, that is corruption.

When an arm of government seizes property on the mere suspicion of wrongdoing, that is corruption.

When that same arm of government spends the seized assets even before the party is charged, let alone proven guilty, that is corruption.

When that same arm of government refuses to return those assets when a party is acquitted, that is corruption.

When an agency targets individuals or small companies for securities violations with the goal of squeezing a settlement, knowing that the party does not have the resources for a lengthy court battle, that is corruption.

When a zealous prosecutor knows he has a weak case, but files charges anyway to bolster his credentials as a crime fighter as a path to higher office, that is corruption.

When an agency stalls and stretches out legal proceedings to delay a defendant’s day in court and wear down his resistance, that is corruption.

When government fines an organization and money paid in settlement is funneled to favored causes instead of into the general fund, that is corruption.

When an agency requires a state to flush billions of gallons of water down a river for the comfort of fish while people are suffering one of the worst droughts in history, that is corruption.

When an agency funds research into hypotheses it favors but not to those testing opposing theories, that is corruption.

When a government agency selectively holds tax-exempt status over someone’s head, not to prevent a bad behavior but to compel a behavior favored by a particular political ideology, that is corruption.

When the government requires a person to violate sincerely held religious beliefs and thus appear to approve something he or she disapproves, that is corruption.

When political beliefs are protected while religious beliefs are not, that is corruption.

When an agency compels mandatory sensitivity training on a topic in vogue, that is corruption.

When an agency ignores congressional requests for documents Congress is legally entitled to, that is corruption.

When an agency conveniently loses email correspondence and other documents it is required to archive and is under congressional subpoena to produce, that is corruption.

When some people get prime seats at state functions as an honor or recognition for service, or simple kindness, that is not corruption. A quid pro quo for such perks is.

When an agency either selectively enforces or selectively ignores the law, that is corruption.

When the Justice Department chooses not to investigate allegations against favored constituencies, but enthusiastically investigates similar allegations against opposite constituencies, that is corruption.

When the IRS shares confidential tax returns with another agency or with a favored constituency, information that by law shall not be shared, that is corruption.

When an agency stonewalls congressional investigations into possible wrongdoing, that is corruption.

When the judicial branch entertains fad legal theories instead of following the law as written, that is corruption.

When the judiciary manufactures new laws or rights from emanations and penumbras, that is corruption.

When the legislative branch relinquishes legislative power to unelected bureaucrats, that is corruption.

When Congress exempts itself from the laws it passes, that is corruption.

When the president refuses to follow immigration and deportation laws resulting in a destabilizing flood of illegal immigrants across our southern border, that is corruption.

When the president freezes all wages and prices contrary to the conditions established by Congress, that is corruption.

When the president presumes to control all of the nation’s resources, whether privately or publicly owned, that is corruption.

When the executive attempts to bypass Congress and write and enforce new laws through executive decrees, that is corruption.

When the president unilaterally changes a law, that is corruption.

When a president ignores checks and balances and governs by decree, that is corruption.

When the president exceeds his authority and does something evil, that is corruption.

When the president exceeds his authority and does something good, that is still corruption.

And finally, in addition to all of the above, when the executive refuses to faithfully execute the law as required by the Constitution, that is not only corruption, it is a prelude to tyranny.

It is my firm opinion that the government of the United States of America, as currently constituted, is riddled with corruption as never before in our history. This corruption results from widespread violation of the most critical concept in the Constitution, the separation of powers. The assembling of legislative, executive, and judicial powers into the hands of unelected officials – which is pervasive throughout government bureaucracies – is, in James Madison’s famous warning, the very definition of tyranny.

Folks (as the president’s palsy-walsy salutation goes), we are there.
